Crane Pengiriman: FCL vs Breakbulk Guide for Oversized Crane Industri Loads

When you buy an overhead crane, gantry crane, or parking system from Tiongkok, the crane itself is only half the project. The other half is getting an oversized, heavy, awkwardly shaped machine from Hefei, Anhui to your site without bending a girder, cracking a control cabinet, or paying twice what you budgeted. This guide covers the practical decision every crane buyer faces: full container load (FCL) versus breakbulk shipping, and how to choose based on dimensions, weight, route, and budget.

Why Crane Pengiriman Is Not Normal Freight

A 5-ton LD single-girder overhead crane with a 16.5 m span ships very differently from a 50-ton LH hoist double-girder crane with a 22.5 m span. The first may fit into a 40HQ container with the girder split into two sections. The second often cannot be containerized at all because the main girder exceeds standard container internal length (about 12.03 m) and the end carriages add height and width.

Typical dimensions that trigger breakbulk instead of FCL:

  • Main girder length over 11.8 m (exceeds 40HQ internal length)
  • Single-piece weight over 28–30 t (exceeds typical container payload limits)
  • Height over 2.69 m after crating (exceeds 40HQ door height)
  • Width over 2.35 m (exceeds container internal width)

For QD universal double-girder cranes from 5 t to 150 t, and YZ metallurgical cranes up to 125 t, breakbulk or flat-rack shipping is the normal route. For KBK light rail systems, MD/CD electric hoists, DHP electric chain hoists, and BZD pillar jib cranes, standard FCL is almost always cheaper and faster.

FCL Pengiriman: When It Works and What It Costs

FCL means your crane occupies one or more full containers. You control loading, you avoid consolidation damage, and you get predictable schedules from Shanghai, Ningbo, or Qingdao. For cranes that can be knocked down, FCL is usually 20–40% cheaper than breakbulk on a per-ton basis.

Best FCL candidates:

  • LD single-girder overhead crane 0.5–20 t with spans under 11.5 m
  • MH single-girder derek gantry with short spans
  • KBK light rail systems, jib cranes, electric hoists, chain hoists
  • PSH puzzle-stack and PCS chain-circulation parking systems (designed for container shipping)
  • Pneumatic-balanced and electric-servo manipulators

Practical FCL advice: Ask your supplier to confirm the longest single piece before you book. A 20 t LD crane with a 22.5 m span cannot go into a 40HQ as one girder — it must be spliced, which affects alignment and requires high-strength bolted joints per GB/T 3811. If splicing is not acceptable for your duty class, move to breakbulk.

Breakbulk Pengiriman: The Right Choice for Large Girders

Breakbulk (also called flat-rack, open-top, or general cargo vessel) handles what containers cannot. For a 50 t LH double-girder crane, a 100 t QD universal crane, an RMG rail-mounted container gantry, or a shipbuilding gantry, breakbulk is the only realistic option. You pay by volume or weight, and you often need a heavy-lift crane at both load and discharge ports.

Cost drivers for breakbulk:

  • Number of lifts and crane capacity at origin and destination
  • Whether the vessel is a scheduled liner or a chartered heavy-lift ship
  • Route: Shanghai to Jebel Ali, Mombasa, or Santos is well served; smaller ports add transshipment
  • Stowage factor — long girders waste deck space even if they are light

For a 50 t LH crane with 22.5 m span, expect breakbulk freight to be 2–3× the FCL cost of a comparable 20 t LD crane. For a 150 t QD crane, breakbulk may be the only option and freight can exceed 15% of the crane value. Always get a quote that includes lashing, cradle design, and marine insurance.

Route and Port Practicalities

Hefei sits in the Anhui industrial crane manufacturing belt, about 400 km from Shanghai and 350 km from Ningbo. Most exports move by truck to Shanghai (Waigaoqiao or Yangshan) or Ningbo, then by container or breakbulk vessel. For landlocked destinations in Central Asia, EAC-certified cranes often move by rail via Khorgos or Alashankou — a different cost model entirely.

If your site is in a country requiring SONCAP, KEBS, or GCC/SASO certification, confirm the certification is issued before shipment, not after arrival. A crane held at port for conformity assessment can cost more in demurrage than the freight itself.

Decision Checklist Before You Book

  • Longest single piece: under 11.8 m? Under 2.35 m wide? Under 2.69 m high?
  • Heaviest single piece: under 28 t? If not, breakbulk or flat-rack.
  • Can the girder be spliced without violating your duty class and GB/T 3811 requirements?
  • Does the destination port have heavy-lift capacity and a route from port to site?
  • Is marine insurance covered for the full replacement value, including electricals?

Chunhua Crane ships 81 standard models across overhead crane, derek gantry, parking systems, light lifting equipment, and manipulators to 60+ countries.
