Ponte Rolante Safety Features to Specify: A Buyer's Checklist
When you issue an RFQ for an overhead crane, the lifting capacity and span usually get all the attention. But the safety devices determine whether that crane is still running safely in year ten — and whether it passes your local inspection regime on day one. This guide covers the four safety systems every buyer should specify in writing: limit switches, overload protection, buffers, and anti-collision. It applies whether you are buying an LD single-girder 0.5–20T for a workshop or a QD universal double-girder 5–150T for a steel mill.
1. Limit Switches: More Than Just Up and Down
Every overhead crane has an upper hoist limit. The question is what type, and how many layers of protection. Specify the following:
- Primary upper limit: A rotary or lever-type limit switch that cuts the hoist circuit before the hook block contacts the drum. On a CD/MD guindaste elétrico, this is tipicamente a lever switch; on a QD double-girder with an open winch trolley, specify a rotary screw-type limiter for finer adjustment.
- Redundant (second) upper limit: Required by GB/T 3811 and strongly recommended for hot-metal, foundry, or continuous-process duty. A second, independent switch prevents the "first switch failed, nobody noticed" scenario.
- Lower limit: Prevents slack rope and reverse-winding on the drum. Essential on cranes used for repetitive low-height picks, such as PSH puzzle-stack parking systems or KBK light rail workstations.
- Long-travel and cross-travel end stops: These are mechanical stops, but pair them with travel limit switches that slow or cut the travel motor before impact. On a large-span MG double-girder gantry, specify a two-stage arrangement: deceleration first, then stop.
Practical advice: ask for the switch brand and IP rating. A limit switch rated IP54 in a foundry with grit and steam will fail early. For YZ metallurgical cranes 5–125T, specify IP65 and heat-rated cable.
2. Overload Protection: Set It, Document It, Test It
Overload protection is the single most requested safety item in export orders, and also the most commonly mis-specified. Two approaches exist:
- Electronic load limiter (load cell + display): Continuous readout, adjustable set point, and data logging. Specify this for QD, QDS smart unmanned, and any crane handling expensive or hazardous loads. A good unidade displays actual load, shows percentage of rated capacity, and triggers an alarm at 90% and a hoist-up cutout at 100–110%.
- Mechanical/hydraulic overload device: Lower cost, robust, common on LD single-girder and MH pórticos. It trips on excess load but gives no readout.
Specify the trip threshold in the purchase order. Standard practice is 100% of rated capacity for the alarm and 110% for the cutout, but confirm against your national standard. Also require a calibration certificate and a test procedure at the factory. For a 50T LH hoist double-girder, insist on a static test at 125% and a dynamic test at 110% before shipment.
One more point: overload protection must cut the hoist-up motion only. Do not let a supplier wire it to cut travel — that creates a dangerous condition where the operator cannot move a suspended load to a safe position.
3. Buffers: Energy Absorption at the End of Travel
Buffers sit at the ends of the runway and on the trolley. They absorb kinetic energy when a crane or trolley reaches its travel limit. Three types are common:
- Polyurethane buffers: Standard for most workshop cranes up to moderate speeds. Low cost, good for LD and LH cranes.
- Hydraulic buffers: Required for high travel speeds and heavy cranes. Specify these for QD 5–150T and RMG rail-mounted container cranes where travel speed exceeds roughly 60 m/min.
- Spring buffers: Used in some gantry and shipbuilding gantry applications; simple but with a harsher deceleration curve.
Specify buffer stroke and energy absorption to match your actual travel speed and crane mass — not just the model number. A buffer sized for a 20T crane at 40 m/min is not adequate for a 50T crane at 80 m/min. Ask your supplier for the calculation.
4. Anti-Collision: Essential When Guindastes Share a Runway
If two or more cranes run on the same runway, or if a crane approaches a fixed end stop in a narrow bay, anti-collision protection is not optional. Options, in increasing order of sophistication:
- Mechanical bumpers and end stops: The baseline. Cheap, but only limits damage — it does not prevent collision.
- Laser or infrared distance sensors: Detect an approaching crane or obstacle and trigger a slow-down then a stop. Good for two-crane bays in a QD or LH installation.
- PLC-based anti-collision with zone control: The right choice for QDS smart unmanned cranes and automated RMG container yards. It enforces minimum separation distances, prevents entry into a protected zone, and logs events.
For manual cranes in a shared bay, specify at least a laser anti-collision system with a two-stage response (audible warning at 5 m, stop at 2 m, adjustable). For automated or unmanned operation, require PLC interlocking with your yard management system.
Specification Checklist for Your RFQ
- Upper limit: type, brand, IP rating, redundant second switch (yes/no)
- Lower limit and travel limit switches: included on hoist, cross-travel, long-travel
- Overload: electronic or mechanical, trip threshold, calibration certificate required
- Buffers: type, stroke, energy rating, calculated for actual speed and mass
- Anti-collision: none / laser / PLC zone control, with separation distances
- Standards: GB/T 3811 as baseline; FEM 1.001, DIN 15018, or CMAA #70 on request
- Components: Schneider, Siemens, ABB, or SEW for drives and controls
