Duty class is the single most misunderstood line on an overhead crane specification sheet — and the one that most often decides whether a crane lasts 15 years or fails in 4. It is not a marketing label. It is a calculated classification of how hard the crane works, and it drives motor sizing, gearbox rating, brake selection, structural fatigue allowance, and ultimately your total cost of ownership.

This guide explains the FEM and ISO/FEM-equivalent duty classes, how they map to the M3–M8 classification used in China under GB/T 3811, and how to pick the right one for your application without overpaying.

What Duty Class Actually Measures

Duty class combines two variables into one classification:

  • Utilization — how often the crane is used (number of lift cycles per hour, hours per day, days per year)
  • Load spectrum — how often the crane lifts its full rated capacity versus a partial load

A crane that lifts 5 tonnes twice an hour is not doing the same work as a crane that lifts 5 tonnes 20 times an hour. Both may be rated 5 t, but the second crane needs heavier-duty motors, a larger gearbox, a higher-rated brake, and a structure designed for more fatigue cycles. That is why two 5-tonne cranes can differ in price by 30–50%.

FEM / ISO Duty Class Table

FEM 1.001 — Light to Continuous Duty

  • A1–A3 (M1–M3): Light duty. Occasional use, low cycle counts. Typically workshop maintenance cranes or standby equipment.
  • A4 (M4): Moderate duty. General workshop use, intermittent lifting. Common for standard LD single-girder pontes rolantes (0.5–20 t) in small fabrication shops.
  • A5 (M5): Medium duty. Regular production use, moderate cycle rates. The most common class for LH hoist double-girder cranes (5–50 t) in general manufacturing.

FEM 1.001 — Heavy to Continuous Duty

  • A6 (M6): Heavy duty. Frequent lifting near rated capacity, multi-shift operation. Typical for QD universal double-girder cranes (5–150 t) in steel yards, ports, and heavy machining bays.
  • A7 (M7): Very heavy duty. Continuous production, high cycle rates, frequent full-load lifts. Required for YZ metallurgical cranes (5–125 t) in foundries and steel mills, where the crane handles molten metal in 24/7 operation.
  • A8 (M8): Continuous duty. The most severe class. Used for container handling, automated storage, and QDS smart unmanned cranes running near-continuously with high load factors.

How Duty Class Affects Service Life

FEM 1.001 assigns a design life in operating hours at each class. A crane designed to A5 might have a theoretical life of 6,300 hours at full load spectrum; an A7 crane of the same capacity might be designed for 12,500 hours. Run an A5 crane in an A7 application and you do not get 12,500 hours — you get premature gearbox wear, brake fade, motor overheating, and eventual structural fatigue cracking.

The reverse is also true: buying an A7 crane for an A4 job means paying for capacity you will never use. The motors, gearbox, and structure are heavier, the crane weighs more, and the runway and building columns must be sized to carry that extra weight.

Practical Selection Advice

  • Count real cycles, not guesses. A "busy" workshop often runs 4–8 lifts per hour. A steel mill runout crane can exceed 30. Measure before you specify.
  • Check the load spectrum. If most lifts are under 50% of rated capacity, you can sometimes justify a lower class. If most lifts are at or near rated capacity, step up one class.
  • Match class to shift pattern. Single-shift general work → A5. Two-shift production → A6. Three-shift or continuous → A7–A8.
  • Do not downgrade to save cost. The price difference between an A5 and an A6 crane of the same capacity is tipicamente 10–20%. The cost of replacing a gearbox or a cracked girder in year 5 is far higher.
