Paper mill roll handling is one of the most demanding lifting applications in heavy industry. A single parent reel can weigh 5–40 tonnes, finished shipping rolls run 1–8 tonnes, and every transfer risks surface damage, core crushing, or a dropped load onto concrete. Choosing the right crane configuration — monorail hoists for linear transfer, chain conveyors for accumulation and staging — determines whether your reel handling line runs at 60 rolls per shift or stalls at 25.

Why Monorail Talhas Dominate Reel Handling

A monorail hoist runs on a single I-beam or box track, tipicamente suspended from the mill roof structure or from a dedicated support frame. For paper mills, this is the workhorse of the reel handling line because it moves on one axis with no bridge structure overhead, keeping the hook path clear and the headroom minimal.

  • Hoist duty class: Reel handling is high-frequency, so specify at least M5 (FEM 1.001) or CMAA Class C. Standard MD hoists in intermittent duty will overheat on a 3-shift mill.
  • Two-speed or VFD control: Creep speed of 0.5–1 m/min is essential for aligning core chucks and setting rolls onto chain conveyors without impact.
  • Track alignment: Monorail track must be laser-aligned to ±2 mm over the full run. Misalignment causes wheel flange wear and erratic trolley travel.
  • Anti-sway: For 20 t parent reels, a rigid C-hook with a guide frame eliminates pendulum swing that damages roll edges.

Chain Conveyors: The Staging Backbone

Chain conveyors move rolls horizontally between the winder, wrapping station, and warehouse without crane involvement. They are not lifting equipment, but they determine how efficiently your monorail hoists work. A crane that must travel 30 m to deposit a roll on the floor wastes 4–6 minutes per cycle. A chain conveyor that receives the roll directly under the hoist cuts that to under 60 seconds.

Typical paper mill chain conveyor configurations:

  • Winder discharge conveyor: Receives finished rolls from the winder, transfers them to the wrapping line. Roll diameter 800–1500 mm, weight 2–8 t.
  • Accumulation conveyor: Buffers 6–12 rolls between wrapping and warehouse, allowing the monorail hoist to work in batches rather than one roll at a time.
  • Transfer car / cross conveyor: Moves rolls laterally between parallel chain lines, often paired with a monorail hoist for the final lift to storage.

Chain conveyor specification must match the roll handling crane cycle. If the conveyor runs at 12 m/min and the monorail hoist travels at 20 m/min, the hoist will wait. Match conveyor speed to the slowest crane motion in the cycle, or specify a VFD on the conveyor drive to synchronize with the hoist.

Integrating Monorail Talhas with Chain Conveyors

The most efficient paper mill roll handling lines use a hybrid layout:

  • Winder area: Monorail hoist lifts the reel from the winder pit and places it on the chain conveyor. The conveyor carries it to the wrapping station.
  • Wrapping area: A second monorail hoist (or the same hoist on a transfer track) lifts the wrapped roll onto the accumulation conveyor.
  • Warehouse: A gantry crane or overhead crane with a roll clamp stacks rolls from the conveyor onto storage racks or trucks.
