Grúas for Steel Mills: Selection and Duty
Steel mill cranes are not general-purpose lifting equipment. A ladle crane handling 120 tonnes of molten steel at 1,550°C operates under conditions that will destroy a standard QD overhead crane within months. The difference comes down to duty class, thermal protection, and structural design. This article covers the four main crane types used in steel production — ladle, charging, stripping, and the YZ series that serves them — and how to specify each one correctly.
Why Acería Grúas Are a Separate Category
Under GB/T 3811 and FEM 1.001, steel mill cranes fall into duty classes A7–A8 (FEM M7–M8), meaning continuous operation at or near rated capacity with high cycle counts. A ladle crane may complete 20–40 lifts per hour, 24 hours a day. Standard industrial cranes are built for A5–A6. Three design consequences follow:
- Steel structure: Q345B plate with full-penetration welds and fatigue verification, not Q235B general fabrication.
- Heat shielding: Radiation shields on the girder underside, heat-resistant cables, and thermal barriers between the molten load and the hoist mechanism.
- Redundant braking: Two independent brake sets on the hoisting mechanism, each rated for 125% of the load — a mandatory requirement for ladle service.
YZ Series: The Metallurgical Workhorse
The YZ series is the base platform for steel mill duty. Chunhua builds YZ metallurgical cranes from 5T to 125T, with the following standard adaptations:
- Double-girder box structure with heat-resistant paint and insulated cabling
- Two-brake hoisting system with emergency DC brake on the ladle hook
- Hardened rail wheels and heavy-duty end carriages for continuous travel
- Optional weighing system and hook height display for ladle positioning
For a typical 50T ladle crane in a mid-size melt shop, the YZ configuration is the correct starting point. If the mill also needs to charge the furnace with scrap or additives, a separate charging crane is usually more economical than over-specifying one unidad for both tasks.
Ladle Grúas: The Critical Lift
The ladle crane is the single most safety-critical crane in a steel mill. Selection criteria:
- Capacidad: Rated for ladle + molten steel + slag, plus a 10–15% margin. A 100T heat normalmente requires a 125T crane.
- Hoisting speed: 5–8 m/min for ladle service — slower than general cranes to reduce sloshing and dynamic load.
- Redundancy: Dual motors, dual brakes, and a manual lowering system for power failure.
- Control: Cab control with emergency backup; remote operation is acceptable only with full redundancy.

Charging Grúas: Speed and Precision
Charging cranes feed scrap, alloys, and additives into the furnace. They differ from ladle cranes in one key respect: they need speed. Typical charging crane specifications:
- Capacidad: 5–50T, often with a clamshell or magnet grab
- Hoisting speed: 15–25 m/min for fast cycle times
- Trolley travel: 40–60 m/min
- Duty class: A7 minimum
For electric arc furnace operations, the charging crane must also handle the furnace roof swing in some layouts — this requires a separate slewing mechanism and careful coordination with the furnace platform. Stripping Grúas: The Forging and Ingot Application
Stripping cranes remove ingot molds from solidified steel in forging and specialty steel plants. The load is heavy, the surface is hot, and the operation requires high pull force at low speed. Key parameters:
- Capacidad: 20–125T, often with a double-hook or special stripper tong
- Hoisting speed: 3–6 m/min with high starting torque
- Duty class: A8 for continuous stripping cycles
- Structural: reinforced girder for shock loading during mold break-out
Stripping cranes are frequently specified alongside YZ ladle cranes in the same bay. Where a mill runs both, a shared runway with two cranes of different duty classes is common — but the runway structure must be designed for the heavier A8 crane.
Selection Checklist for Acería Grúas
- Confirm duty class (A7 or A8) — this drives every component choice
- Specify heat shielding and cable insulation rated for radiant heat
- Require dual brakes and a manual lowering system on ladle and stripping cranes
- Verify structural steel grade (Q345B minimum) and weld procedures
- Match hoisting speed to the process: slow for ladles, fast for charging
- Plan for certification: CE, EAC, or GCC/SASO depending on destination
