A power plant is not one lifting environment — it is several, each with its own duty class, span, and safety regime. The crane serving a turbine hall during a major overhaul has almost nothing in common with the gantry grabbing coal at the stockyard. Buying one "plant crane" to cover both is how projects end up with equipment that is either over-specified and idle, or under-specified and dangerous. This guide breaks the two main duty zones down by model, capacity, and standard.

Turbine Hall: Where Duty Class Decides Everything

The turbine hall crane is the plant's most technically demanding lifting asset. Its job is not routine production — it is precision handling of stators, rotors, upper and lower turbine casings, and generator components during scheduled outages. A single lift can exceed 100 tonnes, and the crane may sit idle for 18 months before being called on for a 30-day overhaul window where downtime costs dominate every decision.

That combination — long idle periods punctuated by intensive, high-value lifts — is exactly what FEM M7 (and its ISO 4301-1 / GB/T 3811 equivalents) is written for. M7 assumes heavy duty with frequent maximum-load lifts during working periods. For turbine halls, specifying M7 rather than the standard M5 is not gold-plating; it reflects the real load spectrum and the consequence of a hoist failure mid-outage.

Recommended configurations for turbine halls:

  • QD universal double-girder overhead crane, 5–150T — the default choice for main turbine hall bays. Twin-girder box construction in Q345B, with a main hoist plus auxiliary hoist for casing and tooling lifts. For a 300 MW-class unidad, a 100/20T or 125/32T QD is typical.
  • QDS smart unmanned overhead crane — for plants pursuing automated or semi-automated outage logistics, with anti-sway control, load positioning feedback, and remote or programmed operation. Useful where the hall has restricted access during radiologically controlled work.
  • LH hoist double-girder, 5–50T — a practical option for auxiliary bays, feedwater pump rooms, and balance-of-plant areas where duty is lighter than the main hall but clean, precise positioning still matters.
  • YZ grúa aérea metalúrgica, 5–125T — specified where the crane must handle molten or high-temperature loads, or operate in heat-radiant zones. Not a turbine hall crane by default, but common in associated plant areas.

Two practical points buyers routinely miss. First, headroom: turbine hall cranes often need a low-construction trolley to maximise hook height above the operating floor, so confirm the actual lift height required before finalising the crane profile. Second, creep speed: a slow, stepless creep on both hoist and long travel is essential for seating a rotor without shock loading the bearings. Specify it in the technical annex, not verbally.

Coal Yard and Bulk Handling: Grúas Pórtico Built for Abrasion

The coal yard is a different world — outdoor, dusty, corrosive, and continuously cycling. Here the crane is a production tool, not an outage tool, and the design priorities shift to structural robustness, dust ingress protection, and rail alignment.

  • MG double-girder gantry crane — the workhorse for stockyard and rail-unloading duty. For grab or bucket work, specify the duty class honestly: continuous coal handling normalmente lands at FEM M6–M7, with the hoist and grab mechanism rated accordingly.
  • RMG rail-mounted container gantry — where the plant receives coal or biomass in containers, or where a rail-served intermodal yard sits adjacent to the stockyard.
  • MH single-girder gantry — suitable for lighter yard duties, maintenance bays, and pump house areas up to moderate capacities.
  • Construcción Naval grúas pórtico — relevant for coastal plants with barge or vessel unloading interfaces, where very large spans and heavy lift capacities are required.

For coal yard gantries, three specification details matter more than headline capacity. Steel grade and corrosion protection: Q345B is standard, but the coating system — normalmente blast cleaning to Sa2.5 followed by a multi-coat epoxy/polyurethane system — determines service life in a coal environment. Dust and moisture protection: specify IP55 or better for motors and control panels, and sealed bearings throughout. Rail and foundation tolerance: grúas pórtico are unforgiving of rail misalignment; agree the rail gauge, level, and settlement tolerances with the civil contractor before the crane is manufactured, not after.

Normas, Components, and What to Put in the Enquiry
