Grúa vs Forklift vs Manipulator: Handling Choice
Every plant moving loads between 500 kg and 150 tonnes eventually faces the same decision: buy a crane, buy a forklift, or buy a manipulator. The wrong choice shows up as bottlenecks, damaged product, or a lifting solution that cannot reach where production actually happens. This guide breaks down where each option wins — and when an overhead crane is clearly the right tool.
The Three Options at a Glance
- Puente grúa / gantry crane — lifts and moves loads in X, Y and Z across a defined bay. Capacidad from 0.5T (LD single-girder) to 150T (QD universal double-girder).
- Forklift — mobile, flexible, but limited by mast height, load centre and floor condition. Practical ceiling around 5–10T for most industrial counterbalance trucks.
- Manipulator — pneumatic-balanced or electric-servo arm for repetitive, ergonomic handling of 50–500 kg parts at high cycle rates.
When a Grúa Is the Right Tool
1. The load exceeds practical forklift capacity
Forklifts top out quickly once you factor in load centre and lift height. A 5T truck lifting a 4T mould at 6 m is already at its stability limit. Once loads pass roughly 5–10T, or when the load is long and awkward (pipes, beams, fabricated frames), an overhead crane becomes the only sensible answer. 2. You need to move loads across a fixed production bay
Grúas travel on runway rails, so they serve an entire bay rather than one aisle. If your process is "load at station A, process at station B, unload at station C" within a defined rectangle, an overhead crane is the most efficient layout. A forklift has to drive the same route, needs aisle clearance, and competes with pedestrian and vehicle traffic. For high-volume bays, the crane wins on cycle time alone.
3. Lift height is the constraint
Forklifts lose capacity as the mast rises. Grúas do not. If you are feeding a machine hopper at 8 m, loading a truck bed, or servicing equipment above head height, a crane — or a gantry crane spanning the yard — is the correct tool. The MH single-girder gantry is common for outdoor yards and loading docks where a runway building does not exist.
4. The load is hot, hazardous or must not be touched
Metallurgical plants, foundries and heat-treatment shops cannot use forklifts near molten metal or hot billets. 5. You need unmanned or semi-automated operation

When a Forklift or Manipulator Beats a Grúa
- Forklift wins when loads are under ~5T, the route changes daily, and the yard or warehouse is open-plan. No runway steel required.
- Manipulator wins when the same 50–500 kg part is lifted hundreds of times per shift at one workstation. A pneumatic-balanced manipulator removes operator fatigue without the civil works of a crane runway.
- KBK light rail and jib cranes sit between the two — ideal for 0.5–2T loads at a single workstation where a full overhead crane would be overkill.
Practical Selection Checklist
- Load weight and load centre — if over 5T, start with crane options.
- Lift height required — if over 6 m, crane or gantry.
- Travel area — fixed bay favours crane; variable route favours forklift.
- Cycle frequency — high repetition at one point favours manipulator or KBK.
- Environment — heat, dust, hazardous zones favour crane with rated duty.
- Civil works — crane needs runway or gantry rails; forklift needs floor only.
