Grúa Remote Control vs Pendant: Which to Specify
When you configure an overhead crane, gantry crane, or jib crane for export, one of the first control decisions is how the operator will command the hoist, trolley, and bridge. The two standard choices are a wired pendant station and a radio remote. How Each Control Type Works
Pendant stations
A pendant is a push-button box suspended from the crane bridge or trolley on a strain-relieved cable. The operator walks with the load, standing at a fixed distance below the festoon or cable reel. Typical pendant enclosures are IP54 or IP65, with single-speed or dual-speed buttons and an emergency stop.
Radio remote controls
A radio remote is a battery-powered transmitter paired to a receiver mounted on the crane panel. It gives the operator freedom to stand anywhere within line-of-sight of the load. Industrial units use frequency-hopping 2.4 GHz or licensed-band transmission, with unique ID pairing so a transmitter cannot accidentally command a neighbouring crane. Most offer proportional joysticks or stepless push buttons, plus a belly-box or shoulder harness for two-handed operation.
Safety: What Actually Matters
- Line of sight: A pendant forces the operator to stay on the walkway or floor position dictated by the cable. On a 50T QD double-girder crane spanning a long bay, this can mean the operator loses sight of the load behind a machine. A radio remote lets them reposition for a clear view.
- Distance from the load: Pendants keep the operator close to the hook, which is useful in a busy fabrication shop. Radio remotes let the operator stand clear of a hot ladle on a YZ metallurgical crane — a genuine safety gain.
- Emergency stop: Both must have a hard-wired e-stop that drops the main contactor. Confirm the remote's e-stop is a physical, latching button, not a software command.
- Interference and battery: Radio remotes need a defined battery-change routine and a spare transmitter. Pendants never run flat, but a damaged cable is a common downtime cause.
- Anti-collision: On cranes sharing a runway, specify a remote with unique addressing and, where required, zone limiting. This is standard on QDS smart unmanned cranes but should be requested on manual units too.
Ergonomics and Productivity
A pendant operator spends the shift walking and looking up. On a 30 m span MG gantry crane handling 20T loads, that is significant fatigue and slow positioning. A radio remote with proportional control lets the operator feather the trolley and hoist for precise placement, which matters when setting a 5T load onto a machine bed.
For light and small lifting — a BX wall-mount jib or a KBK light rail system with an MD/CD polipasto eléctrico — a pendant is often the better fit. The operator is already at the workstation, the travel distances are short, and a pendant keeps the control simple and the cost low. For a DHP electric chain hoist on a workstation jib, a small pendant or even a push-button station on the column is usually sufficient.
Practical Specification Advice
- Match control to duty: For a 5–20T LD single-girder crane in a warehouse, a pendant is usually adequate. For a 5–150T QD universal double-girder crane in a heavy bay, specify a radio remote as standard.
- Specify the interface: State whether the remote must be compatible with Schneider, Siemens, ABB, or SEW drive and contactor components. This avoids rework at commissioning.
- State the standard: Design to GB/T 3811 as the baseline. If the buyer's market requires FEM 1.001, DIN 15018, or CMAA #70, say so at quotation stage, because it affects the control circuit and documentation.
- Certificación: For CE, EAC (TR CU 010/020), GCC/SASO, SONCAP, or KEBS markets, confirm the remote transmitter carries the relevant radio approval. A CE-marked crane with a non-compliant radio module is a customs problem waiting to happen.
- Spares: Order one spare transmitter and one spare pendant cable per crane. This is cheap insurance against a 30–45 day production lead time for a replacement.
Can You Have Both?
Yes, and on many export projects it is the right answer. A dual-control arrangement — pendant as the primary station plus a radio remote for positioning — is common on QD and LH double-girder cranes. The receiver is wired in parallel with the pendant, with a selector switch so only one control is active at a time. This gives the maintenance team a fixed control point and the production team the freedom to move.
