Crane Manufacturer vs Trading Company: Which to Buy From
Every overseas buyer sourcing an overhead crane, gantry crane, or electric hoist eventually faces the same question: should you buy directly from a crane manufacturer, or through a trading company that aggregates supply? The answer affects your unit price, your engineering support, and how much customization you can actually get. Here is a practical breakdown based on how the Chinese crane export market really works.
What Each Type Actually Is
Direct crane manufacturers
A manufacturer owns the fabrication line, welding and machining capacity, assembly bays, and load-testing equipment. Hefei Chunhua Hoisting Machinery Co., Ltd, founded in 2003 in the Anhui industrial crane manufacturing belt, is this type of supplier. It builds LD single-girder overhead cranes (0.5–20T), LH hoist double-girder cranes (5–50T), QD universal double-girder cranes (5–150T), and YZ metallurgical cranes (5–125T) in-house, using Q345B/Q235B steel and components from Schneider, Siemens, ABB, and SEW.
Trading companies
Trading companies do not weld girders or test hoists. They quote from a network of factories, add a margin, and coordinate shipping. Some are competent export intermediaries; many are one-person operations with no engineering staff. The risk is that when a specification question arises — say, your runway span is 22.5 m and you need a 16T LH crane with a specific hook approach — the trader must relay the question to a factory that has no obligation to you.
Price: Where the Difference Shows Up
Trading companies typically add 5–15% on top of factory pricing, and that margin is invisible because you never see the factory invoice. On a 10-ton LD single-girder crane with a 16.5 m span, that spread can be several thousand USD. On a 50-ton QD double-girder crane, it is larger still.
But price is not only the invoice. Consider:
- Specification padding: traders often quote a heavier, more expensive model because they cannot verify a lighter one will meet your duty class.
- Hidden change orders: if the factory discovers your site conditions differ from the trader's brief, you pay for the correction.
- Freight and documentation: an experienced manufacturer shipping to 60+ countries handles CE, EAC (TR CU 010/020), GCC/SASO, SONCAP, and KEBS documentation as routine. A trader may subcontract this and bill you for it.
Direct manufacturers also quote faster. Chunhua Crane operates a 4-hour quote SLA with no MOQ, so a single-unit order gets the same engineering attention as a batch order.
Technical Support: The Deciding Factor
Support is where the manufacturer/trader gap becomes expensive. Ask yourself what happens at these moments:
- Selection: You need to choose between an MH single-girder gantry and an MG double-girder gantry for an outdoor yard with 30 m span. A manufacturer's engineer runs the wheel-load and wind-load calculation against GB/T 3811 or FEM 1.001. A trader forwards a catalogue.
- Installation: Your KBK light rail system or BZD pillar jib crane needs anchoring details for your slab. The factory can supply foundation drawings and bolt layouts.
- Commissioning: A PCS chain-circulation parking system or QDS smart unmanned crane needs PLC parameter setting. The builder has the programmers; the trader has a phone number.
- Warranty: A 12-month warranty is only worth what the issuer can deliver. A manufacturer ships replacement parts and can send a technician. A trader must negotiate with a third party on your behalf.
For standard MD/CD electric hoists or DHP electric chain hoists, the support gap is small. For a YZ metallurgical crane in a steel mill or an RMG rail-mounted container crane, it is decisive.
Customization: Who Can Actually Say Yes
Customization requests fall into three tiers, and traders handle only the first:
- Tier 1 — Configuration: voltage, pendant vs. radio control, hoist brand, paint color. Any competent supplier handles this.
- Tier 2 — Dimensional: non-standard span, reduced headroom, special hook approach, extended cantilever on a gantry. This requires re-running design calculations and re-drawing the girder. A manufacturer does it; a trader must persuade a factory to break its standard schedule.
- Tier 3 — Functional: explosion-proof execution, anti-sway control, automated positioning for a QDS smart unmanned crane, or a shipbuilding gantry with tandem lifting. Only the party that owns the design can engineer this.
If your project sits in Tier 2 or 3, buying from a trading company usually means either a refusal, a long delay, or a silent substitution of a standard model that underperforms.
When a Trading Company Makes Sense
Be fair to the model. A trader can be the right choice when:
- You are buying several unrelated product categories in one shipment and want a single consolidated invoice.
- You need a small quantity of a commodity item — say, five DHP electric chain hoists — and price is your only criterion.
- You already have in-house crane engineers who write the specification and only need a procurement channel.
Even then, verify that the trader names the actual factory and that the factory's certifications — CE, CCC, EAC — cover the model you are buying, not just the company.
A Practical Buying Checklist
- Ask for the manufacturer's business license and factory address, then confirm the welding and assembly capability.
- Request the design standard in writing: GB/T 3811 as baseline, or FEM 1.001 / DIN 15018 / CMAA #70 on request.
- Confirm the steel grade (Q345B for main girders) and the component brands (Schneider, Siemens, ABB, SEW).
- Get the production lead time in the contract — 30–45 days is typical for standard models from a direct manufacturer.
- Confirm warranty terms and spare parts availability for 12 months and beyond.
- Test responsiveness before you buy. A supplier that answers a technical question in hours will answer it after the wire transfer too.
The Bottom Line
For standard cranes bought purely on price, a trading company can work. For anything involving non-standard spans, duty-class selection, automation, or a multi-year support relationship, buy from the manufacturer. You get the engineering, the accountability, and the lower price — because you removed a margin layer that added no technical value.
