How to Verify a Chinese رافعة Supplier: A Practical Buyer's Checklist
الصين exports more overhead and رافعات جسرية than any other country, and the price gap between a genuine manufacturer and a trading intermediary can reach 20–30%. For a buyer committing to a 5–150 tonne QD double-girder crane or an RMG container gantry, the verification process before signing is the single highest-leverage step in the project. This guide covers the three verification pillars: factory audit, certificate validation, and reference checks.
1. مصنع Audit: Separate Manufacturers from Traders
Most "crane factories" you find on B2B platforms are trading companies. That is not automatically disqualifying, but it changes your risk profile: no direct control over weld quality, no ability to inspect a QD 100T girder before shipment, and no leverage on warranty claims.
Ask for the business license (营业执照) and check the registered scope. A legitimate manufacturer's license will list "crane manufacturing" (起重机制造) as a licensed activity. Then verify the physical plant:
- Production floor area and bay height. A factory building LD single-girder cranes (0.5–20T) can operate in a modest workshop. A plant producing QD universal double-girder cranes up to 150T needs bays tall enough to assemble and load-test a 30-metre span girder — عادةً 18–24 m clear height.
- Welding and steel preparation. Look for submerged-arc welding stations for main girders, not just manual arc welding. Q345B plate should be cut on CNC flame or plasma tables. Ask to see the material certificates for the steel plate lot tied to your order.
- Load test capability. Every crane must be tested at 125% of rated capacity before delivery. A factory that cannot perform a static and dynamic load test in-house is subcontracting — which means someone else controls your delivery date.
- Component inventory. Genuine manufacturers hold Schneider contactors, Siemens PLCs, ABB drives, and SEW gearboxes in stock. If the factory cannot show you a component store, they are buying per-order, which adds weeks to lead time.
Request a live video walkthrough rather than a photo gallery. Photos are recycled across trading company websites for years. A scheduled video call where you direct the camera to specific areas — the welding bay, the test stand, the finished-goods yard — is much harder to fake.
2. Certificate Validation: Check the Scope, Not Just the Logo
A CE certificate on a homepage means nothing. What matters is whether the certificate's scope covers the specific crane type and capacity you are buying.
- CE (EU). الرافعات fall under the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. The certificate should reference EN 15011 for bridge and رافعات جسرية, and the technical file should include a risk assessment and load test report. Check the Notified Body number against the EU NANDO database.
- EAC (TR CU 010/2011 and 020/2011). Required for روسيا, كازاخستان, Belarus, and Armenia. The certificate must list the specific models — a generic "crane equipment" scope will be rejected at customs.
- GCC/SASO. Required for المملكة العربية السعودية and Gulf states. SASO certification now runs through the SABER platform; verify the certificate number there.
- SONCAP (نيجيريا) and KEBS (كينيا). Both require a pre-shipment verification of conformity. Confirm the exporter can issue the Certificate of Conformity, not just a test report.
- CCC. Mandatory for cranes sold within الصين. A factory holding CCC for its own production is a positive signal of domestic compliance.
Cross-check the certificate holder's name against the factory name on the business license. A frequent red flag: the CE certificate is held by a trading company, and the actual manufacturer has no certification at all.
On design standards, confirm which code the crane will be engineered to. GB/T 3811 is the Chinese national standard and is the default. If your project specifies FEM 1.001, DIN 15018, or CMAA #70, that must be agreed in writing before production — it affects girder deflection limits, duty classification (A3–A8 or M3–M8), and ultimately the steel weight and price.
3. Reference Checks: Talk to Buyers, Not Salespeople
Ask for three references from your region or a comparable market, with contact details. Then actually call them. Useful questions:
- Did the crane arrive on the agreed date? What was the actual production and shipping timeline?
- Were the components as specified — Schneider, Siemens, ABB, SEW — or were substitutions made?
- How was installation and commissioning handled? Did the supplier send engineers, or was it handled locally?
- Have you filed any warranty claims in the 12-month period? How fast were parts shipped?
Also check third-party inspection history. If the supplier regularly works with SGS, BV, or TÜV for pre-shipment inspection, that is a strong signal — these agencies will not issue a report on a crane that fails load testing.
Red Flags and Green Flags
Red flags: no physical address or a residential address; certificate scope narrower than the quoted crane; refusal to allow a third-party inspection; pressure to pay a large deposit before a factory visit; quoted lead time under 20 days for a QD 100T crane.
Green flags: verifiable factory in an established crane manufacturing cluster (Hefei, Anhui; Changyuan, Henan; Xuzhou, Jiangsu); component stock on site; willingness to provide steel mill certificates; documented load test reports for previous orders; references who answer technical questions knowledgeably.
A supplier that passes all three pillars — factory audit, certificate scope validation, and reference calls — is worth a long-term relationship. One that resists any of them is a cost you will pay later, usually during installation or in the first year of operation.
